Materials

Upper: Natural Leather
Natural leather can be recognized by its untreated surface. BIRKENSTOCK purposely does not treat surface grains and other characteristic features. BIRKENSTOCK uses sturdy leather with a thickness of 2.8 to 3.2 millimetres as upper material.

Footbed Material: Cork
Cork is a sustainable material extracted from the bark layer of the cork oak. This natural product is insulating and offers very good cushioning.

Insole: Suede
The flexible leather lining, which is gentle on the skin, nestles up softly against your foot and adjusts to its contour. The open-pored and thus very breathable surface makes for a comfortable foot climate, even during more strenuous physical activity.

Outsole: EVA
EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) is a high-quality, very light, elastic material with excellent cushioning to help smooth out uneven surfaces and keep every step softly cushioned.

WHEN YOU HAVE RECEIVED YOUR FOOTWEAR

Unbuckle all the straps and place your feet in the shoes. Make sure your heels are all the way back in the heelcups. The contours of the footbed should correspond to your own arches and the toe grips should fit comfortably beneath your toes.

Before you stand up, look to see if there is about 1cm of extra space for your toes and your heels and about 5mm on each side of your feet. You'll need this extra room because your feet will expand when you stand and walk.

Buckle the straps. Support comes from the footbed, not from tightly buckled straps. A securely fastened toe strap should be enough to keep your foot firmly in the footbed. Other straps can be worn loosely.

Please be careful when buying your Birkenstocks that you get the correct length as well as width. You should have a few millimeters of space in the heel and toe areas. Your toes should not touch the cork wall at the front nor should your heel touch the back. This will improve the longevity of your Birkenstocks.

BREAKING IN YOUR BIRKENSTOCKS

Adjust to your new shoes gradually, as they may introduce new movements to the muscles in your feet and legs. Although your shoes may feel rather rigid at first, their flexibility will increase with wear. Leather straps will become more supple and the footbeds will adjust slightly to your feet.

Once your shoes have been "broken in", the footbeds will have a slight upward curve where your toes bend when you walk. You can get a head start by bending them at the toe with your hands. This will soften the footbed and make it easier to walk in your new shoes.

We try to be as flexible as we can, as we know that it is not easy with sizes!

Returns

For online purchases (except for clearance  styles as below) we have a 14 day returns policy (includes swaps) from when you receive the goods. We do refund subject to clearance policy below.

As standard, returns must be wrapped, in original packing (box), not worn outside with all tags attached and internal wrapping paper

Swaps

For an incorrect size (except for clearance  styles as below)  - we allow 1 swap for a change in size (cost to return is yours and we send the replacement at our cost). Phone or email us with what you would like to do and once returned we will send out the new size. To quicken the process up, you can place another order for the correct size & we'll send it out - then refund once the original is returned (at your cost).

If the second pair sent is returned we will deduct a $7-00 restocking fee from any refund.  This helps us with the cost of the 2 freight charges.

Bundles

If part of a bundle (group of items with an added discount) is returned, any amount refunded will bring the cost back to the original non bundled price.

e.g. 2 packs of socks at $20.00 each normal price, A total of $30.00 paid, 1 pair returned the refund will be $10.00. This brings the amount paid back to the non bundled price of $20.00

Clearance Lines

Clearance lines will have a specific returns policy, outlined in their product description in red. If not there then our standard returns policy applies.

Mostly they will be less a returns fee, however:

Shipping within NZ is free. We use Aramex NZPost (courier) or Poste Haste Couriers and aim to get your purchase to you as quickly as possible.  They will leave our shop the same day (not weekends or public holidays) if ordered before 1:00p.m. or next day if ordered after.

We try to aim for overnight delivery within the North Island, but this may not happen. South Island deliveries can take 3 days or more.

Post Office Box numbers can take a bit longer, as we have to shut the shop to get to the Post Office to send, but we are happy to do it.

There is no charge for Rural Deliveries, so please add your R.D. number to make it easier for our staff.

 WATER EXPOSURE

Do not immerse in water
Our shoes should not be immersed in water as the glues and sealants can dissolve and the leather can become hard and brittle. If the buckles are exposed to salt water, carefully rinse them to avoid corrosion. If Birkenstocks become wet, allow them to dry slowly, away from direct heat. Our EVA collection is the only range that has been designed for use in and around water.

CORK-CARE

Please inspect your cork footbeds regularly. If cracks appear apply cork sealant as described above. If the cork breaks down too far the only option is to replace the entire footbed including the EVA sole unit. This is called recycling.

HEAT WARNING

Both the cork and the soles of your Birkenstocks can be damaged by exposure to concentrated heat. Do not leave your shoes in closed cars on warm days and keep them away from radiators and fireplaces. If your shoes become wet, allow them to dry slowly, away from direct heat.

AIRING

The footbed is constructed of layers of jute and cork covered in a suede lining. The footbed is designed to absorb moisture from your feet. It is recommended to air your footbeds regularly to prevent a build up of odours which occur from excess moisture.
